Bad habits are so hard to break. I was a smoker for about 30 years and couldn't seem to break the habit no matter what I tried. Every now and then, I was able to quite for a few weeks, but then, when I started smoking again, I smoked far more than I did before I quit. It wasn't until I accepted the fact that my smoking was a real problem and reached out for professional help with quitting. People can be depressed their whole lives and even be so depressed that they think of suicide quite often. For those people, medication may be necessary to help lift them out of their deep-seated sense of sorrow or anger. What about other people? What about those who are normally happy and content, but have been through something that was emotionally shattering?

Grief and depression that is neither acute nor chronic springs up in everyone's life at least once. For these people, it is something that will pass, and they can opt to take medication or not take medication. Group Therapy

People who feel the pain of divorce have a group. People who are recovering alcoholics have a group (and many people in this group are depressed, too). People who overeat in an attempt to hide hurt feelings and past traumas also have a group, and there is almost always a group for depression. Find that community group and attend a session to see if it is for you. 

Exercise

Exercise helps alleviate a lot of sadness because your brain increases dopamine and endorphins in the brain during exercise. These natural "happy chemicals" help you feel better when you have a low-grade depression that is not expected to last a long time or be life-threatening. Try to get about twenty minutes a day, which can help increase mental clarity and give you time to process thoughts and feelings while increasing your brain's supply of happy chemicals.
